Marriage & Diabetes: Anything Worth Having is Worth Fighting For
Marriage & Diabetes: Anything Worth Having Is Worth Fighting For
Marriage is a lot of work. It’s a lot of work for anyone. But adding diabetes in the mix, adds a lot of extra work and sacrifice on both ends.
He chose me—Diabetes just happens to be part of the “package deal”.
Every day my husband worries about my blood sugars—He worries about the kids—He worries all the time. He’s constantly making sure that I’m okay—from morning all the way through the night. If he’s not present, he checks on me by text messages and phone calls. It’s not easy on either end. But we’re in this together.
He’s also an active-duty military member and he’s away a lot. It puts a lot of added pressure not only on him but on me as well. I’ve gotten so used to having someone there to make sure I’m okay. I’ve had to learn to adapt to new situations where someone may not be there.
Being a military spouse has taught me to be fully self-aware of my diabetes at all times. To be cautious of how I’m managing my diabetes, and to always be alert. I’ve really had to really step up my game. It’s not only me that I’m looking out for. It’s my children as well. He depends on me. My children depend on me.
I continue to be supportive of him knowing that life isn’t JUST about my diabetes. That anything worth having is worth fighting for. Even if it takes those extra steps, hard work, and sacrifice. I’m not going to let diabetes hold us back. No matter the limits, we push past them.
I’m so appreciative of the support he shows me as well in return. He gives me the opportunity to stay home and raise my children, educate myself, and follow my dreams. He understands my moods. He knows when my blood sugar is high or low by how I look or act. He may not understand exactly what I’m feeling or going through, but he tries to show compassion.
He appraises me for how far I’ve come and how I won’t let diabetes keep me down. He says that he admires how strong I am and how diabetes makes me the person that I am. Having diabetes and being married has given me a whole different perspective towards the future and my health. Showing me how important I am and how much I mean to my family.
Diabetes has tested us in so many ways. More ways than I could image. Marriage is a team effort. We’re both diabetic in a sense. It’s all about understanding and working together. It may not be an easy road. But it’s so worth it.
Marriage has been a true test of our strength and our ability to withstand anything that life throws at us. Including diabetes.
Happy Anniversary hun.
