Let’s Raise Our Voice For Esme
Having diabetes is a challenging disease within itself and has many obstacles to overcome. But one of the most important continuing issues that many diabetics face today, is healthcare coverage.
“Why must we fight tooth and nail to have our insurance costs lowered?” The cost of deductibles and premiums are through the roof. Some patients are even denied medically necessary equipment and medication.
There are millions of diabetics in the world, that are fighting to survive and live the best quality of life possible. It’s reported by the CDC that more than 29 million people in the United States have diabetes.
“Why must it come to such a price? “Why should anyone with a severe health condition live without proper medical care?” Living with diabetes is a chronic life-threatening disease, and it shouldn’t be taken lightly.
A story that really hits home most recently is about a young 2-year-old girl named Esme being denied coverage for the necessary diabetes devices for sustaining her health.
It is quoted by Beyond Type 1 that “the patient’s own medical logs show she is experiencing hypoglycemic unawareness, severe hypoglycemia, severe glycemic excursions, wide fluctuations in blood glucose before mealtime, a HbA1C greater than 7.0, and a history of inadequate glycemic control. Without proper care, Esme could suffer from a wide variety of symptoms such as seizures, coma, brain damage, retinopathy and death.”

As we come together as a community, we raise our voice and support one another in efforts to make a difference in the world. Not only for diabetics but for anyone who is suffering from a major chronic disease.
